STEM Start Program: Equipping Students for Success In College

Completion of undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees continues to lag behind workforce demands, and success rates for populations traditionally underrepresented in STEM disciplines remain substantially lower than the same rates for other students. With the recent launch of a B.S. degree in manufacturing engineering at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), the university has initiated the STEM START program to provide additional support to incoming first year students majoring in STEM disciplines.

“The STEM START program is designed to bridge gaps between high school and college such that students are ready for success in college-level coursework on the first day of classes. By leveraging practices shown to build students’ persistence and sense of preparedness, we aim to increase both retention and graduation rates in engineering and technology programs,” explained Dr. Judith Jenkins, associate professor of chemistry and director of EKU’s Center for STEM Excellence.

First year students majoring in College of STEM programs are the target audience for this program. The pilot program was held in the fall of 2024 and was composed of students majoring in the manufacturing engineering and engineering technology management degree programs. “In the fall of 2025, we plan to expand the program to include students in animal science and wildlife management programs,” said Dr. Jenkins.

The 4-night, 4-day STEM START 2024 program was held in August before the beginning of the fall semester. During this project-based experience, students got to practice and apply fundamental concepts and skills relevant to their majors as well as interact with current students, faculty, and staff in the College of STEM. Most activities took place within EKU’s Science Building and Whalin Technology Complex. On the final day of the program, participants experienced a behind-the-scenes tour of Powertrain Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, led by EKU alum and head of the facility, Mr. Mark Klee. Students noted this as the highlight of STEM START!

According to Dr. Jenkins, “The program, including housing, meals, and activity supplies, is free to participants, thanks to a combination of grant funding and generous funding from donors.”
