Selective Admissions Programs

At Eastern Kentucky University, we offer several selective admissions programs that provide specialized opportunities for qualified students. These programs often have additional application requirements or criteria beyond standard admission to the University. Learn more about our selective admissions programs and what’s required for each below.

Associate of Applied Sciences in Nursing (AASN)

All students who are accepted by Eastern Kentucky University and declare their major as Pre-Nursing (AASN) are admitted to the University as a pre-associate of applied science in Nursing student. However, students must also complete a School of Nursing online application and be accepted to the AASN program after they are regularly admitted to the University. This application and all other required criteria are due by May 15 for the following Fall and October 31 for the following Spring. A minimum EKU GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required for admission into the AASN program.

Traditional 4 Year BSN

All students who are accepted by Eastern Kentucky University and declare their major as Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) are admitted to the University as a Pre-Nursing (BSN) student.

Students seeking to enter pre-nursing courses (NSC 232, 232L, 242, and 252) must meet minimum program GPA requirements of 2.5, submit the Override Request Form for NSC 232, 242, 252, and obtain School of Nursing Chair approval. (This form is located in the BSN Handbook and must be signed by the student’s College of Health Sciences academic advisor). Spaces in these courses are limited and reserved for students with academic records most likely supporting admission to the clinic Nursing courses.

Students must have completed the first three semesters of college work as outlined in the BSN curriculum plan and have submitted a complete School of Nursing application to be considered for admission to the program. Students must also have completed all prerequisite courses with a grade of “C”/2.0 or better, within the specified time frame, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

2nd Degree Nursing (BSN)

EKU offers a specially sequenced progression plan (21 month/5 semester) BSN option for those students holding a baccalaureate degree in another field of study. A minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 must be met on the graduating GPA of the student’s bachelor’s degree. Admission is competitive and based on a review of all required material submitted with the application packet and the entire academic history.

Course pre-requisites include (15-16 credits) Anatomy and Physiology I (BIO 307), Anatomy and Physiology II (BIO 308), Microbiology (BIO 273 or MLS 209), Nutrition (NFA 201), and Statistics (STA 215 or STA 270). The science and the nutrition classes must be completed within the last five years prior to entering the program. These may be completed full time or part time at EKU or other institutions. Course equivalencies for classes previously are located on the Transfer link.

Applicants are admitted to EKU’s 2nd degree program once each year in August. Applications are due March 1st of every year for the program that begins the next August.

Pre-American Sign Language Interpretation (ASL)

The Interpretation B.S. program (ITP for short) is a traditional Face-to-Face program.

All students who are admitted to EKU and declare their major in our program begin as Pre-ITP students and must apply to the full ITP major after completing the ITP admission prerequisites. During the first 1 – 3 years, students work on developing the foundation of their ASL fluency along with completing the General Education classes required for a bachelor’s degree.

Application to the program does not guarantee admission. Admission to EKU as a Pre-ITP major is not synonymous with admission to the ITP. Due to accreditation requirements and available resources, this program has limited enrollment (around 20 students). Each application will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee and the student will be notified of the committee’s decision.

Departmental Credit by Examinations are offered for the following courses: ASL 101, 102, 201 and 202.

Aviation (Professional Flight)

The Professional Flight concentration within the B.S. in Aviation includes all commercial and instructor pilot ratings.  This program provides future pilots with the flight time they need to become competitive.  With approximately 250 hours of flying time, our students are prepared for careers ranging from small corporate flight departments to the largest commercial airlines.

Professional flight students may receive FAA flight certifications as a Private Pilot, Instrument Pilot, Commercial Pilot with a single engine and multi-engine rating, and Instructor Pilot with a single engine, multiengine, and instrument rating. Additionally, professional flight students receive a world class aviation education in multiple areas of aviation organizational leadership to better prepare them for flying careers in the aerospace industry.

There are additional flight fees associated with this concentration. You are also able to transfer your Private Pilot License.

Social Work (B.S.W.)

If you have been accepted by the University Admissions Office and declare your major as social work you will be classified as a pre-social work major. Admission to pre-social work does not guarantee admission to the B.S.W. program.

Admission to the program is required for progression in the major beginning with SWK 350 and 354. To be admitted students must have earned at least 32 hours of college credit, meet the minimum program GPA requirement of 2.50, complete SWK 210 and other supporting course work with a minimum grade of “C,” and successfully complete application procedures. Students choosing to double-major must declare social work as the first major.

Additionally, for Transfer students there are some additional requirements.

Click here for more information about the Social Work (B.S.W.) program requirements.

Pre-Occupational Therapy (OT)

The Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy offers a combined Bachelor of Science in Occupational Science – Occupational Therapy Doctorate (BSOS-OTD) for all students who want to become an occupational therapist! A combined degree decreases time to graduation and tuition costs.

If you have been accepted by the University Admissions Office and declare your major as Occupational Science/Therapy, you will be classified as a Pre-Occupational Science student.

Students transferring to EKU from another institution, and applicants who already have a baccalaureate degree in another discipline are encouraged to apply.

Other Pre-Professional Programs/Tracks

EKU has a number of programs that will help prepare students for professional schools following graduation. These schools generally do not require a specific major, provided that their prerequisite courses are taken. All professional schools are highly competitive in their admissions process. Thus, students should aim for strong GPA and professional school admission test scores. Students are encouraged to seek a major that they feel comfortable with, that they have a strong aptitude for, that is interesting and challenging, and that provides additional career options.
