Zhikang Shi, translator of a new version of “The Analects of Confucius” and professor of English language and literature at Shanghai International Studies University, will speak at Eastern Kentucky University on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
His lecture, titled “Cultural Elements of Confucianism in Cross-Cultural Communication,” will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 108 (Dick Mayo Allen Auditorium) of the John Grant Crabbe Main Library. Free and open to the public, the event is presented by the EKU Asian Studies Program and sponsored by the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky, the EKU Department of Communication and the EKU Department of Philosophy and Religion.
Shi will elaborate on “The Analects of Confucius,” commonly seen as the Bible in Chinese culture and philosophy, drawing its connections to Western culture and literature as he examines the relationship between Chinese and Western cultures, with a focus on similarities and mutual assimilative possibilities.
The speaker’s academic accomplishments include governmental documents, literary studies and works and essays, as well as monographs chiefly on Shakespeare, American poetry and English poetry.
