An Eastern Kentucky University faculty member is the author of a new book “Higher Education Compliance: Blueprint for Success."

Judith W. Spain, J.D., CCEP, professor of business law, College of Business and Technology, explained that "rapidly changing laws and an evolving student and faculty population make compliance with the myriad of federal and state laws and institutional policies an increasing challenge. Campuses must rise to this challenge by developing an effective compliance program. There remains one major barrier–the overwhelming confusion experienced by campus professionals thrust into a compliance role."

This book is designed for the new compliance professional who needs to understand how to develop, implement and monitor a compliance program that would be supported by institutional leaders. To write this book, Judy drew on her experience serving as the general counsel and chief ethics and compliance officer at Eastern Kentucky University as well as serving in the same roles at Manhattanville College, a small private liberal arts college.

EKU President Emeritus Dr. Doug Whitlock stated, “With the clarify and succinctness of the master teacher she is, Dr. Judy Spain has written a nuanced explanation of the why and a guide to the how of compliance. In today’s environment, this is a very important read.”

Ms. Mary Gawlicki, former Trustee and Board Audit and Compliance Committee Chair, Manhattanville College, states “Spain’s handbook gives a step-by-step process for launching and maintaining a successful program in an easy-to-follow format. If you have been contemplating instituting a compliance program, start by reading this book.”

Judith W. Spain, J.D., CCEP, is an attorney, licensed in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. Judy holds the designation of a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional through the Society for Corporate Compliance and Ethics. She presently is a Compliance Program Consultant with the Georgia Independent College Association.
