Undergraduates at Eastern Kentucky University and at colleges and universities throughout the Commonwealth now have another venue to showcase their scholarly and creative work.
The multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship, housed at EKU and the first of its kind in the state, will be published online twice annually and include entries from life sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, creative writing and the performance arts.
The Journal will be housed at the EKU Libraries Encompass portal: encompass.eku.edu/kjus. Its online format will enable the Journal to cut costs, accept more submissions and include audiovisual elements. “That’s a big advantage,” said Editor-in-Chief Dr. Jonathan Gore, director of undergraduate research at EKU.
Submissions are invited from undergraduate students at all public, private and community colleges and universities across Kentucky. Students can develop KJUS manuscripts based on their own independent research, faculty-mentored research or existing coursework. They can also revise major scholarly works for submission, including mentored scholarly projects, or papers from capstone courses, independent studies with faculty and thesis projects.
“This will be a nice repository for all we’re doing at our post-secondary institutions to highlight the best work of our students,” Gore said. “It engages undergraduates in the kind of dissemination that professors in those areas do. This is usually something reserved for graduate students, but there’s no reason undergraduates can’t have this experience.”
Submissions have started to come in for the inaugural issue, which Gore expects to debut by June 2016.
