A biomedical sciences degree provides a versatile skill set that prepares students for a variety of healthcare professions and serves as a foundational first step toward graduate and professional school programs, including pre-dental, pre-medical, pre-optometry, pre-physician assistant, pre-veterinary.

Employment of medical scientists is projected to grow 10 percent from 2022 to 2032.

During the same period, demand for other professions in biomedical sciences is also expected to increase, veterinarians by 20 percent, optometrists by 9 percent, and dentists by 4 percent.

Program Options

Choose between six specialty concentrations that offer the opportunity to tailor the degree to specific academic and professional goals and give you a competitive edge as you progress. Required internships provide hands-on experience and mentoring from experts in their fields. Students can prepare to apply for medical school or veterinary school. Concentration options include:

Biomedical research students can identify an area for specialized study including such examples as clinical pharmacology, medical pathology, and toxicology.

Pre-dental students begin studies in general dentistry and explore possible specialty areas including dental anesthesiology, dental public health, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial radiology and surgery, oral pathology, pediatric dentistry, and periodontics.

Pre-medical students identify their interests in a wide range of fields including anesthesiology, cardiology, dermatology, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, pathology, psychiatry, radiology, and many types of surgery.

Pre-optometry students begin studies of general optometry and explore other specialties such as low vision or treatment of a particular population such as infants and children.

Pre-physician associate students’ study to work within a variety of specialties including primary care and family medicine, emergency medicine, psychiatry, and many others.

Pre-veterinary students study the treatment of companion animals, food animals, wild animals, or animals kept in captivity. They may also focus on the care and inspections of animals related to food safety.

Curriculum & Enrollment


Learn essential skills for today’s biomedical sciences careers. Our programs are made up of high-quality courses and taught by experienced professors. EKU’s curriculum blends academic and professional preparation through course topics such as biology and microbiology, ecology and evolution, genetics, zoology, physiology, chemistry and biochemistry, biomedical ethics, physics, mathematics and statistics, anatomy, immunology, virology, histology, embryology, psychology, cultural anthropology, sociology, and career preparation.

A minimum of 120 credits are required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. A portion of the credit requirements vary depending on the concentration.

Students may transfer up to 90 hours of credit from accredited institutions. Please note that a minimum of 30 credit hours in this degree program must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.

Previously earned credits must be reviewed upon admission to EKU for appropriate articulation.

All applicants must provide an application and evidence of appropriate scholastic achievement through prior educational experience.

Please note that certain degree programs have special admission requirements. Admission to the University does not mean automatic admission to all degree programs.

The completed application and all required supporting documentation must be received by the University no later than:

• August 1 for fall enrollment
• December 1 for spring enrollment
• May 1 for summer enrollment
