Career Outlook

Employment of agricultural and food scientists is projected to grow as research into agricultural production methods and techniques continues. The need to address challenges such as increased demand for water resources, combating pests and pathogens, and changes in climate and weather patterns is expected to create jobs for these workers. Demand for agricultural products, including biofuels, also is expected to contribute to employment growth.

Overall employment of agricultural and food scientists is projected to grow 6 percent from 2022 to 2032.

Program Options

Choose between six specialty concentrations in agriculture that offer the opportunity to tailor the degree to specific career goals and give you a competitive edge in the job market. Options include:

Combine your interest in agriculture with critical business skills to give you a competitive edge in agribusiness management. Our courses and curriculum give you hands-on experience at our 1,000- acre production farm, in our green houses, teaching and research labs, mechanic shop, and garden and turf plots. Students gain perspective on managerial problems and are prepared to pursue employment in regional, national, or global agribusiness, including opportunities in farm management, labor and personnel management, commodity procurement and marketing, and public policy.

An agriculture engineering concentration is a foundation for professions involving material processes and testing, robotics, hydraulic systems, diesel power systems, algebra and statistics, lean operation methods, technical communication, and project management.

Students who pursue this concentration can specialize in animal science, ecology, sustainable agroecosystems, pest management, soil fertility, field crop production, geographic information systems (GIS), agricultural advocacy, research methods, and horticultural issues.

This concentration can lead to a career in pest control, soil management, horticultural systems, greenhouse operation, harvest technology, agricultural advocacy, research methods, or horticultural issues.

Studying a livestock management concentration puts students on a career path to several specialties: livestock evaluation, animal products, livestock feed, management of horses, beef or dairy cattle, swine, or poultry, ecology, animal diseases, livestock genetics, animal nutrition, and livestock welfare.

Earning a BS in a turfgrass and landscape concentration enables students to pursue careers in pest management, soil management, turf grass management, horticultural equipment, landscape operations, agricultural advocacy, research methods, or horticultural issues.
