EKU Retirees Association

The Eastern Kentucky University Retirees Association (EKURA) was created during the 2004-2005 academic year. The purpose of the EKURA is primarily to provide an opportunity for all EKU retirees to social network through meetings, programs, and excursions.

The association also provides an opportunity to assist EKU in academic and non-academic activities, to be involved with issues that impact retirees, to communicate with its members, and to develop and add to the EKURA scholarship fund and to annually award a scholarship to a deserving student.

Membership in the EKURA is open to any full or part-time faculty and staff retiree of EKU. Spouses and partners of any living or deceased member are eligible for associate membership in EKURA.

There are two types of membership. EKU retirees may become lifetime members with a single fee of $120. $100 of that amount is designated for the scholarship fund and is a tax deductible donation. Lifetime members do not pay any dues thereafter. Individuals may also become members on an annual basis for $10 per year. During the first year of retirement, however, all EKURA dues are waived.

Membership checks should be made out to EKURA and sent to Treasurer Fawn Conley, 144 E. Walnut Street, Richmond, KY 40475, or brought to any regularly scheduled meeting.

The leadership of the association, between meetings, is guided by a five-member executive board that plans both the meetings, tours, awarding of scholarships, and communications, with the assistance of EKURA members.

  • Informative programs are available every other month on a variety of topics of interest to retirees, including updates on retirement benefits, the latest political developments, and healthcare initiatives.
  • Special interest groups, including travel to points of interest within driving distance of Madison County, and a Food/Drink interest group, allow members to share interests and stay in touch.
  • Funding of an endowed scholarship to a deserving EKU student
    Significant service and volunteer opportunities allow members to contribute thousands of hours to meet the many needs in the local community.
  • Up-to-date information on health insurance and other issues of concern to retirees

  • KRTA News, a quarterly newsletter which contains information of interest to retirees.

EKURA Bylaws 2012 Revision

I. Name of Organization
The name of the organization shall be the Eastern Kentucky University Retirees Association (EKURA).
 
II. Purpose

  • To provide a formal organization for any EKU retirees to social network through meetings, programs, and excursions.
  • To assist EKU in appropriate academic and non-academic activities.
  • To become involved with any issues that might impact the status of retirees.
  • To communicate the organization’s activities to members through traditional means and via our website.
  • To develop and add to the EKURA scholarship fund and to annually award a scholarship to a deserving student.

III. Board of Directors

  • The Board of Directors shall serve without pay and consist of five members. They are the President, President Elect, Past President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
  • Vacancies shall be filled by the Board until that officer replacement is elected by the membership.
  • Board meetings shall be chaired by the President or in his/her absence the President Elect.

IV. Officers

  • The President, President Elect, and Past President shall serve in each position one (1) year.
  • The President shall not serve consecutive terms.
  • The President is responsible for presiding at meetings and overseeing all organizational operations.
  • The Secretary and Treasurer shall serve for two (2) years, and their terms shall be staggered.
  • The Secretary and/or Treasurer may succeed themselves.
  • The Secretary shall take minutes of all meetings and report them at the next meeting, transmit approved minutes to the Webmaster, assist the Treasurer with membership records, assist in mailing any items, maintain all EKURA’s records in a orderly manner, and arrange for transfer of older records to EKU’s Special Collection and Archives for permanent preservation.
  • The Treasurer shall collect and deposit all dues and other monies, maintain accurate financial records, present financial reports at meetings, send treasurer’s report to the Webmaster, and work with the Secretary in maintaining accurate membership records.

V. Membership & Dues

  • Regular membership. Any full or part-time faculty and staff retiree of EKU shall be eligible for EKURA membership and participation in EKURA activities. All regular members in good standing shall have the right to vote.
  • Associate membership.  Associate membership shall be open to the spouses or partners of any living or deceased regular members.  Associate members shall be non-voting but may participate in debate and serve on committees.
  • Lifetime membership. Any regular or associate member is eligible for membership. Dues are $120.00, with $100.00 designated to the Scholarship Fund. The $100.00 is a tax- deductible donation. The member does not pay any dues thereafter.
  • During the first year of retirement dues are waived; thereafter the Treasurer will collect annual dues at the beginning of our calendar year (July 1 to June 30).
  • Annual dues are not tax deductible.
  • Amount of dues is subject to change. Any change in the dues amount must follow the amendment process as stated in VII. Amendments.

VI. Committees

  • Committees shall be appointed by the President.
  • Standing committees shall be:
  • Nomination–shall solicit persons willing to serve as officers and present a slate of candidates for voting at EKURA’s June meeting.
  • Scholarship–shall work with EKU’s Advancement Office in selecting a student(s) worthy of receiving a scholarship.
    Programs and Excursions–shall organize all bimonthly programs and excursions and any other events for the calendar year.
  • Ad Hoc committees shall be named and appointed by the President. 

VII. Meetings

  • Calendar year shall run from July 1 to June 30.
  • Regular meetings shall be held in even numbered months (February, April, June, August, October, and December) on the third Tuesday of the month, with a location and time to be determined by the Board.
  • Special meetings may be called any time as deemed necessary by the President or a majority of the Board.
  • Voting by the membership shall be by simple majority of those present at a meeting.

VIII. Rules

The rules contained in the current edition of Robert’s Rules of Order shall govern EKURA in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with the bylaws and any special rules of order that EKURA may adopt.

IX. Amendments

  • The first reading of an amendment shall be conducted at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Association.
  • Passage of an amendment shall be by two thirds (2/3rds) of the members in attendance at the next regularly scheduled meeting.
