Welcome to EKU: A Freshman’s Guide to Fall Semester

As summer wraps up, Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) is preparing for the arrival of new students for the Fall 2024 semester. Here are some essential dates and tips for incoming freshmen of EKU.

Attend Your Scheduled Orientation

At New Student Orientation days, students get more familiar with campus before they move in for the fall semester. Students and their families tour campus, register for classes and meet their classmates and residence hall mates, among other activities throughout the day. They also learn all the details about moving in and what to expect as a future Colonel.

Keep up With Important Dates

  • August 14 and 15 – First-year student move-in
  • August 15 – Big E Welcome Kickoff and Welcome Walk
  • August 16 – Big E Concert
  • August 19 – Classes start
  • September 27-28 – Family Weekend
  • October 26 – Homecoming

Prep for Move-In Day

Check out the EKU Housing move-in page for everything you need to know. It includes a detailed list of what to bring and what to leave at home, along with instructions and directions. Coordinate with your roommate to avoid bringing duplicate items. Be sure to review the list of prohibited items and prioritize essentials to avoid overpacking. Need a reminder of the time and day you chose to move onto campus? You can see that on your Housing Portal. Check your email for the latest information.

Check Out Ways to Get Involved at EKU

The college experience is more than earning a degree—it can also be about exploring interests, building relationships and discovering lifelong passions. One of the most rewarding parts of college can be getting involved in campus activities. EKU has more than 200 student clubs and organizations. Drop by Colonel Craze on August 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Powell Student Center to learn about the organizations EKU offers.

Plan Your Schedule Wisely

Take the time to review course requirements and craft a balanced class schedule. Pay attention to class times and workload and include time for extracurricular activities. An advisor can help to make a course schedule that fits best with students’ goals.

Stay Connected and Seek Support

It is important to stay connected with supportive family, friends and campus resources. These relationships help encourage students throughout the college journey. Never hesitate to reach out to advisors, professors or classmates with questions or assistance. Building a strong network makes a positive impact when it comes to student success. EKU offers an abundance of free resources, such as tutoring, workshops and mental health counseling, to help students adjust to college life.

By following these tips and taking every opportunity available at EKU, students can make the most of their college experience and build a solid foundation for academic and career growth.
