Student Gains Competitive Edge by Participating in Colonels at the Capitol Internship

The Colonels at the Capitol Internship Program (CCIP) allows Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) students the opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge of the state’s political process while developing professional skills through research, communication and networking. Participants work alongside Kentucky legislators, spending Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort throughout the spring semester.

Somerset, Kentucky native, Eric DeMunbrun is one of this year’s seven interns and has been working under Senator Reginald Thomas.

“I’ve gotten to sit in committee meetings and legislative sessions to see the policy process. We get to discuss and analyze bills and policies,” said DeMunbrun. “To see it firsthand, analyze it and have discussions with legislators that have been doing it for years has been really valuable to me.”

DeMunbrun, a senior social work major, plans to use his experience from the CCIP in his future career in macro social work on the community or legislative level.

EKU juniors and seniors with a 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.2 major GPA and who have completed POL 101: Introduction to American Government are eligible to apply for the CCIP. Learn more at government.eku.edu/colonels-capitol-internship-program.
