EKU Volleyball Team Going to Europe, Thanks to Support from Former Coach Polvino

Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Hall of Fame Volleyball Coach Dr. Geri Polvino, a beloved mentor and leader, gave two transformational gifts to EKU’s Volleyball Team, continuing a legacy of support and dedication to the program. The gifts amount to $125,000—establishing the Volleyball Alumni Legacy Fund to encourage alumni contributions and funding a 2025 European tour for the Volleyball team.

“We are incredibly grateful for this generous gift and the lasting impact it will have on EKU Volleyball,” said EKU President David McFaddin. “The opportunity to compete internationally and experience new cultures is truly life-changing for our student-athletes, and the creation of the Volleyball Alumni Legacy Fund will strengthen our program for years to come. This gift is a powerful reminder of the deep bond within the EKU community, and we are thankful for the unwavering support of our alumni and coaches.”

Originally from Rochester, New York, Polvino came to the Campus Beautiful in 1965 to complete her master’s degree in education. As a graduate assistant, she was asked to coach EKU’s Volleyball team and then became one of the nation’s most successful coaches during her 31-year tenure (1966–97) at EKU. Polvino led her teams to 627 victories, nine conference championships and eight league tournament titles. A trailblazer in collegiate volleyball, she was the first volleyball coach inducted into the OVC Hall of Fame in 2005 and was honored as a 1991 EKU Hall of Distinguished Alumni inductee. Polvino’s 1973 Women’s Volleyball Team was inducted as a Team of Distinction at the 2024 EKU Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony. The ’73 team set the record for the best overall season in program history, finishing 26-4, and dominated state competition, securing their third consecutive Kentucky Women’s Intercollegiate Conference title.

Inspired by her 1973 team and in an effort to provide support for EKU’s volleyball program, Polvino donated $25,000 to establish the Volleyball Alumni Legacy Fund.

In addition to leading teams to success on the court, Polvino took her teams on cross-country and international trips for various volleyball camps, creating unforgettable experiences.

“I see the program providing just an extraordinary experience for young women,” said Polvino. “It goes beyond domestic competition to include international opportunities and incorporates everyday lessons—hard work, not getting down in defeat, working with each other, and building each other up. All those experiences shape the future of volleyball at EKU, embracing something truly extraordinary.”

Polvino gave $100,000 to EKU’s volleyball team to establish a European tour through her family legacy work. The tour through Italy, Croatia and Slovenia will offer international competition, as well as the chance to explore historical cities, experience cultures and create lasting memories.

“We are super grateful for the generous donations that Geri provides for the volleyball program. These funds allow for the program to grow and elevate. It also provides the student-athletes and team with a true Division 1 experience,” said EKU Volleyball Coach Johnna Bazzani. “To have the ability to take the team to Europe is truly something special. A lot of collegiate programs do one every four years, and this is something that helps set us apart and give the team one of the best experiences.”

Polvino has contributed in total approximately $900,000 to EKU, supporting women’s athletics, academics and student success. Her generosity has funded endowed scholarships, student programs and facility improvements. Polvino’s steadfast dedication to EKU and coaching legacy continues through her philanthropic efforts and service.
