Colonel Gains an Inside Look of Politics Through Colonels at the Capitol Internship Program

Carley Frost, junior political science and criminal justice major, pre-law minor, is one of this year’s participants in the Colonels at the Capitol Internship Program. Through this experience, Frost has gained knowledge about the behind-the-scenes work of legislative processes, as well as helpful life and career skills.

“I’ve learned how important relationships are, especially in politics, and how important it is to treat people with kindness,” said Frost, from London, Kentucky. “The internship has provided me with several qualities that I will use in my future career: sensibility, communication, humility and more.”

Participants are selected after a competitive application process, which requires juniors or seniors to have a 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.2 major GPA and complete POL 101: Introduction to American Government. The interns then get to work alongside Kentucky legislators, spending Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort throughout the spring semester. Frost works with Representative Deanna Frazier Gordon, a 1991 EKU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in communication disorders.

“The first day of the internship, Representative Deanna Frazier Gordon gave me a tour of the Capitol. As I stood on the steps with her, I was extremely proud to have the opportunity to represent my school and be awarded the chance to work so closely with our legislators—it felt like a dream,” said Frost.

After graduating from EKU with her bachelor’s degree, Frost plans to attend law school. Ultimately, she wants to serve the Commonwealth as a defense attorney.
