Academic Readiness

EKU Academic Readiness programs help new, full-time freshmen (NFTF) students achieve academic success and degree completion. Classes, workshops, programs, tutoring, one-on-one and group mentoring initiatives, and social activities provide students with opportunities for skill development designed to improve academic aptitude in writing, reading, mathematics and the sciences, as well as academic self-confidence, college-and-career-ready social skills, success strategies, and financial literacy.

Placement Guidelines

All students are required to demonstrate college readiness skills in reading, mathematics, and writing. These skills are assessed by ACT, SAT, KYOTE and EKU placement test scores. Students are encouraged to prepare for the placement tests by using the sample online placement tests. These tests may be scheduled by contacting the EKU Office of Academic Testing at 859-622-1281. Students not demonstrating proficiency are required to successfully complete additional coursework.

Success First

The Success First program is designed for first-time freshmen who are admitted with a 2.0-2.49 high school GPA and/or test scores requiring students to take English and Math classes with support.

Students admitted into the Success First Program can expect to receive:

  • Specially-designed advising, mentoring, tutoring and other support services
  • Assistance creating learning goals and setting expectations
  • Education in financial literacy
  • Guidance in exploring Majors and Careers.

Students with two or more academic readiness area requirements or have a high school GPA between 2.0 and 2.49 are enrolled as associate degree or “exploratory” majors. They are permitted 16 hours of University enrollment, unless otherwise specified by admission status. The Office of Advising & Career Services will assist these students in establishing connections to the departments of their intended majors.

Academic Readiness FAQs

Your college readiness needs are based on test scores the EKU Office of Academic Testing has on file for you. The following test scores may be considered: ACT subscores in English, math, and/or reading; SAT subscores in writing, critical reading, or math; EKU placement testing; or KYOTE scores.

  • Students needing ENG 101R should take the course during their first fall, spring, or summer semester of enrollment at EKU.
  • Students should enroll in academic readiness math courses, such as MAT 105P or MAT 112P, no later than the beginning of their second semester of university enrollment.
  • Students that earn a “B” or “C” in ENG 101R will need to enroll in ENG 102R the following semester. Students earning an “A” in ENG 101R will be able to register for ENG 102.

You may retake your ACT or SAT to get a score that meets the required benchmarks. You also may take an EKU placement test and try to test out of the course. You are allowed to attempt placement testing twice. Please call Academic Testing at 859-622-1281 for available testing dates. If you have KYOTE scores from a Kentucky high school transition program that indicate you have met college readiness benchmarks, those scores will get you out of readiness courses. KYOTE scores can be emailed directly to heather.davis@eku.edu from high school counselors, or sent to EKU on kyote.org.

You may call the Academic Testing Office at (859) 622-1281, or send an email to academic.testing@eku.edu.
