Academic Fresh Start

Undergraduate

If academic fresh start is granted, the work will remain on the transcript; but it will not be counted in the student’s GPA and will not count towards degree requirements, including the upper division hours requirement.

All academic course work, including fresh start work, will be counted in computing graduation with honors.

The student must state, in writing, his or her intention to participate in the Fresh Start program by completing the Academic Fresh Start Declaration Form below. The student will also specify which semesters are being requested for fresh start. Only semesters with a term GPA of less than 2.0 are eligible and, within those eligible terms, only grades of “D”, “F”, or equivalent, may be considered.

The student may not have previously participated in Academic Fresh Start or declared bankruptcy from EKU.

Any student requesting fresh start of academic work must not have attended EKU or any other institution of higher education during a period of at least two consecutive years following the time of the work to be considered.

After being readmitted, the student requesting fresh start must attain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA with no grade lower than a “C” on ALL college-level (i.e. 100 or above) Eastern work up to and including the term in which the twelfth hour is attempted. All courses and grades, including repeated courses, will be counted in computing the GPA.

Graduate

If Academic Fresh Start is granted, the work will remain on the transcript but it will not be counted in the student’s GPA and will not count towards degree requirements. Students admitted to a new degree program under this policy will only be admitted with probationary status and must meet the requirements for probationary admission in order to maintain enrollment in the new graduate program.

The student must state, in writing, his or her intention to participate in the Fresh Start program to the Graduate School by completing the Bankruptcy Declaration Form. The student will also specify which semesters are being requested for fresh start. The student may request any or all semesters of their prior work for fresh start, but all work from a given semester will be applied to fresh start if the student requests to apply that semester to fresh start and if the request is approved.

The student may not have previously participated in Academic Fresh Start or declared bankruptcy from EKU.

Any student requesting fresh start of academic work must have been out of the previously enrolled program for a period of at least one year after attempting the work to be considered.

The student must apply to a different graduate program than the one he or she was enrolled during the semester of the work to be considered for fresh start.
