Greek Life

Fraternity & Sorority Life

Offering students the opportunity for increased social engagement, networking, and philanthropic participation, fraternities and sororities are some of the most active and visible groups on EKU’s campus. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life advises and supports our community of more than 15 organizations, along with the inter-fraternity council, panhellenic council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

Information about events leading up to the Joining Process of any of the four Greek councils will be available on Engage and in the CORQ App.

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

Since 1968, our EKU fraternities have continuously recruited members of character with high scholastic achievement that show leadership on campus and in the local community. It is the obligation of our fraternal community to encourage the development of our members in becoming the future leaders of our society.

The Multicultural Greek Council was founded in 2019 as our youngest Greek Council. Our historically multicultural fraternities were founded here at EKU to support oure Latine student population. MGC chapters nationally support members of many different diverse backgrounds, from Latine, to Asian, to Indigienous identifying students. As will all of our Greek Councils, humans from all walks of life can join MGC Chapters.

EKU is home to one MGC Fraternity: Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity.

Currently, we are in the process of expansion. The following groups have also been invited to be part of our Multicultural Greek Council:

  • Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc.
  • Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc.
  • Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc.

EKU’s culturally based fraternity and sorority chapters follow a joining process called membership intake. Each chapter will hold an informational meeting for students interested in membership. Chapters may hold intake at different times of the year. Each organization has different minimum standards in order to start the membership intake process. Please remember that discretion is part of the process. If you are interested in one of our new or existing MGC Chapters, please complete the following interest form.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council at Eastern Kentucky University is the governing body for our historically Black Greek-Letter Organizations (BGLOs). Currently, there are 7 organizations on the yard. There are currently four sororities: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.. Also, there are currently three fraternities: Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. All nine members of the NPHC are interested in re-establishing a chapter on campus if one does not currently exist.

Nationally, there are nine BGLOs recognized by the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). They are known as the Divine Nine. NPHC fraternities and sororities represent over 1.5 million members internationally.

The council promotes interaction through forums, meetings, and other mediums for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.

NPHC does not have a formal recruitment process. Membership intake is the joining process conducted by EKU’s historically black organizations, which are governed by the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Membership selection for NPHC groups is an individualized process that is different for each organization. Chapters choose the time when they will take new members. This process, known as intake, generally begins with an interest meeting followed by a period of membership education. The membership process culminates with initiation and a probate, or New Member Presentation, in which the organization’s new members are revealed to the community.

NPHC chapters embrace a lifetime commitment and aim to assure the continuance of academic achievement, political awareness, philanthropy, and community service. Additionally, NPHC affiliated fraternities and sororities typically do not accept a student for membership until the student has completed at least 12-24 hours of college credit with a 2.5-2.75 GPA depending on the organization. We strongly encourage those interested in the Membership Intake process to contact the respective NPHC organizations for more information.

Welcome to the Panhellenic Council at Eastern Kentucky University. We are so proud of our seven nationally recognized organizations that are a part of the fraternity and sorority community at EKU. Please visit their chapter profiles below. Joining a sorority provides young women with endless opportunities to excel scholastically, to participate in community service, to be involved in campus involvement, to grow as a leader, and to form lasting friendships.

Becoming a member of a sorority chapter is the perfect way to find your home at EKU. Our chapters each possess unique traits and welcome all types of young women. We are so excited that you have shown interest in Fraternity & Sorority Life, and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us at greeklife@eku.edu or (859) 622-3855.
