Honors Program Advisory Committee

Responsibilities
The Honors Advisory Committee exists to hear and approve matters of admissions, policy and curriculum.

Membership Composition
The committee consists of the executive director, associate directors and assistant director, as well as faculty representatives from each of the six academic colleges (two representatives from the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences and one representative from each of the remaining academic colleges), a staff representative and three student members (the current Eastern Honors Association (EHA) president, an appointee of the SGA president and an appointee of the executive director).

Proposals for Honors Seminars
The Honors Advisory Committee will make selections of the proposed honors seminar courses and will ensure that a broad slate of academic offerings is offered each term. The Honors Advisory Committee may inquire in greater detail about specific proposals before final selections are made.

Each proposal should include the following for review:

  • A sample syllabus draft that includes a complete title, a course description, the relevant HON course number(s) suggested for it, and the semester, time, and desired place it should be offered; and
  • A statement from the relevant department chair(s) (via e-mail to david.coleman@eku.edu) indicating departmental approval for the faculty member(s) to teach in honors and, if relevant, the departmental special topic cross-listing required for it.

The Honors Advisory Committee will give priority to those proposals with the following features:

  • Evidence of innovative strategies, methods, and activities including out of classroom experiences and experiential learning of all kinds.
  • Use of a seminar approach as is common in honors courses that promote active learning strategies
  • Focus on a subject that transcends a specific academic discipline
  • Evidence of intellectual appeal to students from a variety of majors
  • Descriptions of assignments that promote critical thinking, independent research, creativity, and effective writing
  • Departmental permission via e-mail from relevant chairs (to david.coleman@eku.edu) to release all faculty members involved in an individual course to teach in honors and cross-list a relevant course in honors
