What do you do at EKU?

I work with EKU students who are pregnant and/or parenting. Our program supports student parents by providing a space where they can connect with other parenting college students, get connected to resources, receive work study, learn about financial benefits, receive advising and mentoring and more.

I enjoy being in the outdoors. I love camping, going to the lake, kayaking, and gardening.

What’s a fun fact about you or a hidden talent people may not know about?

I failed my freshman orientation class. At the time, I thought I was the only person in history who ever failed freshman orientation. I later learned that wasn’t true, I didn’t give up and soon learned better ways to study and organize my time. Most importantly I found my passion for social work, have earned multiple degrees, and now work and teach at the same school I once failed at.

Is there a book, movie, or TV show you love and would recommend?

I should probably answer this with something academic, however, my actual favorite is TV shows. I love Gilmore Girls and have watched it more times than I can count. If you ever want to discuss Team Jess or Team Logan let me know.

Call Me By Your Name. It is a lovely but also realistic view on LGBTQIA+ culture, more specifically gay male culture, and what challenges this community faces.

What advice do you have for FirstGen students?

Ask questions, so many questions. The worst thing someone can do is sit in silence. Some students will have advantages from their parents or other individuals in their lives to help guide them through the best college/university process. But, as a first-generation student, this is going to be very unknown. Yes, it can be scary to reach out to people you may not know, however, asking the right person the right questions could offer new opportunities you never thought possible.

Book: Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward. It’s an intense and powerful story about a working-class African-American family in Mississippi in the days leading up to and following Hurricane Katrina. | TV: Pushing Daisies. It only ran for two seasons, but the visuals and production style are stunning and the interactions between its quirky characters is fast-paced and funny.

What advice do you have for FirstGen students?

As corny as it sounds: you belong here. Don’t be afraid to ask for help OR to accept help when it’s offered (folks don’t offer to help if they don’t mean it). Use any and all of the spaces, resources, and connections available to you. Don’t let anything stop you from taking on challenging tasks—you are capable. Study abroad if you can (not doing so myself is one of my biggest regrets).

What advice do you have for FirstGen students?

There are so many people here on campus who want to help you, so don’t be afraid to ask for help anytime. There is no such thing as a stupid or dumb question, especially if you are first-gen because you are, quite literally, paving a new path for yourself. You’re embarking in a new direction. The first couple of months in college can be really overwhelming, so don’t let that catch you off guard or make you feel like you’re incapable of succeeding. Try not to compare yourself to your peers because everyone is on their own journey and it is going to look very different from yours. It’s really easy to get trapped into a cycle of thinking that everyone else is “getting it together” or has everything figured out, but that’s just not true at all, we are all just trying to make it one day at a time. Make sure you take time to do things that bring you peace and joy outside of your studies, like a hobby or simply just going for coffee with your roommate. And finally….SLEEP. Get enough sleep. Sleep is your friend.
