Bio

Dr. Gregory E. Gorbett is a full-time Professor with Eastern Kentucky University teaching in the Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology Program. Dr. Gorbett is also a professional Fire and Explosion Analyst. He holds National Board Certification as a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI), International Association of Arson Investigators Certification as a Certified Fire Investigator (CFI), as well as certification as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) through the National Fire Protection Association. CFEI status deals with the accurate listing of a fire or explosion’s, origin, cause, and responsibility. CFPS status deals with issues of fire protection, fire safety, and knowledge of fire safety codes and standards. 

Dr. Gorbett holds two Bachelor of Science degrees, including a cum laude Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic Science, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Science from the University of Maryland. He also holds two Master of Science degrees, one in Executive Fire Service Leadership, and the other in Fire Protection Engineering. He also holds a PhD in Fire Protection Engineering. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association’s Technical Committee of the Standard for Fire Investigator Professional Qualifications (NFPA 1033, between 2004-2014, 2016-present) and was a member of the National Fire Protection Association’s Technical Committee on Fire and Explosion Investigations (NFPA 921) between 2016-2018. He served as the Chairman of the Executive Board of the NFPA Fire Science and Technology Educator’s Section, served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Fire Investigators (2003-2017), served as the Vice-Chair of the Fire and Arson Investigator Journal of the International Association of Arson Investigators (2012-2019), and was the Executive Secretary on the Crime Scene/Death Investigation Scientific Area Committee’s (SAC’s) Fire and Explosion Investigations Subcommittee within the Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). 

Primary Areas of Academic Interest: 

Fire and explosion investigation and analysis; Enclosure fire dynamics and fire behavior via residential scale and small-scale experimentation; Fire science and its application to building codes, building construction, fire protection and forensics; Failure analysis and electrical fire causation; Mathematical modeling and computer simulation of fires in buildings; engineering forensic tools; and the use of computer fire models in fire investigation, reconstruction and protection.

Bio

Paul Grant is an educator with Eastern Kentucky University in the Fire and Safety Engineering Technology department. He has instructed with the University of Phoenix, Colorado State University, and Red Rocks Community College in Denver, Colorado. He facilitates and lectures regularly with students from a variety of fields. His goal is to help learners create synergistic explanation to subject specific problems as they relate to the topic at hand. Prior to his current position, he taught fourth grade in the Mesa Public School system in Mesa, AZ. He is a retired fire chief who worked in the Denver Metro Area. Raised in Colorado, he now lives with his wife Linda in Kentucky. They fancy traveling between Missouri, Florida, and Delaware to visit their children and grandchildren. Someday Paul hopes to visit Russia and fulfill a life long dream. Along with his busy schedule as a teacher he tries to find time to hop on his motorcycle now and then and travel in the south eastern part of the country.

Bio

Dr. Hicks has over 20 years of experience in the emergency services, occupational safety, and fire protection fields. He is a Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Fire Protection and Paramedicine Sciences, teaching in the Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology Program at EKU. He retired as the Chief of the White Hall Fire Department in Madison County, KY. Dr. Hicks has served on the Madison County Rescue Squad, and as the Search and Rescue Coordinator for the Madison County Emergency Management Agency. He has completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology, with emphasis in Fire, Arson, and Explosion Investigation, Minor in Police Studies. Mr. Hicks also earned a Master of Science in Loss Prevention and Safety, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Bill is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program and holds the Chief Fire Officer Designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence (Formerly ICHIEFS). Mr. Hicks is very active in the profession having served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Fire Investigators and the Board of Directors of the NFPA’s Fire Science and Technology Educators Section. Mr. Hicks is an amateur radio operator and serves as a Official Emergency Station (OES) for Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) in Kentucky. Dr. Hicks is married with two “daughters”, both Australian Shepherds.
