Scholarships

EKU Scholarships

Many times students have overlooked the availability of scholarships across the university, within the college, and even some program specific funding opportunities. All internal EKU scholarships are now found and applied for under the foundation scholarship application portal.

This link takes you to the Foundation Scholarship page. You must create an account and apply using the instructions available. Please review the requirements for each scholarship before applying. Please ensure your application includes all relevant information to determine your eligibility for each scholarship you are interested in.

We are now accepting applications for FPPS specific awards to be made starting fall 2022. Applications must be made in the Slate portal linked above. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, April 20th.

You can also view many of the scholarships available to students of the college, its degree programs and FPPS. Outside scholarship applications should be sent directly to the sponsoring organization.

Fire and Safety Scholarships

Arthur Glatfelter Scholarship

*Recipients can receive this scholarship for up to 8 semesters total *
Students must re-apply each semester/year – Scholarship amount varies each semester. Available to both incoming & current students.

To be eligible for the award, students must possess the following qualifications:

  1. Majoring in a Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology program degree with a commitment to Fire and Emergency Services or Loss Control/Loss Prevention professions as a career or vocation.
  2. A commitment to scholastic achievement
  3. Incoming Freshmen Students must have a high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The graduate’s pre-college entrance examination scores and graduating class rank should also be considered.
  4. Transfer students transfer grade point average of 2.75 or higher. If the student is a transfer from a “Fire Science” curriculum, the applicant must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher in courses taken in the major. The applicant’s pre-college entrance examination and high school graduating class rank should also be considered.
  5. Currently enrolled students must have a current grade average of 2.75 or higher. Must be active in the Fire Science student organizations.
  6. Student must be enrolled full time at EKU.

NAFI - John A. Kennedy Investigation Scholarship

To be eligible for the award, students must:

  1. Major in fire investigation
  2. Student member of NAFI
  3. Junior Standing (college)
  4. A 3.5 GPA or better for the first two years of undergraduate study.

Richard Washburn Scholarship

To be elgible for the award, students must:

  1. Be enrolled as a full-time student in a Fire & Safety degree program at Eastern Kentucky University.  Programs include:
    –  Fire Protection Administration
    –  Fire, Arson & Explosion Investigation
    –  Fire Protection & Safety Engineering Technology

  2. Have a minimum GPA of 2.0

  3. Have demonstrated participation and achievement in the fire and emergency services, which can include, but is not limited to, the volunteer fire service; rescues services; emergency medical services, industrial emergency response, fire and emergency services training; or other similar.  The participation in the emergency services can be as a result of participation in an Explorer or other similar program, participation in emergency services related cooperative education placement, or similar emergency service placements that the committee judges to meet the intent of the requirement.

  4. Provide the scholarship committee proof of participation and achievement in the fire and emergency services.  This requirement can be completed by providing copies of certificates, portfolio, completion of a resume, or any other documentation that would be helpful to the committee in determining the applicant’s qualification for this scholarship.

  5. Obtain three letters of recommendation.

  6. Complete an application cover letter outlining future career goals, current emergency service participation and any qualifications that would be considered appropriate for this scholarship.

Outside Organization Scholarships

The following organizations periodically offer scholarships. Check individual organization websites for current availability.

FSSAED Scholarship

Each year, the FSSAED awards scholarships to candidates who are or will be participating in the fire protection programs at their universities. Annually, the foundation awards nearly $20,000 to worthy candidates.

Any student or college-bound individual affiliated with the fire suppression industry is eligible to apply as long as they graduated from high school or its equivalent before Jul. 1 of the year in which they will use the scholarship or are already enrolled in a fire protection program. No restrictions exist based upon the candidate’s employment status, sex, race, creed or nationality. It is important to note that previous winners are eligible for a second award.

The FSSA Educational Foundation selects recipients based on a number of criteria, including academic success, interest, special abilities, financial need and other factors that may impact the candidate’s selection. The judges who award the scholarships are comprised of members of the FSSA Educational Foundation’s Board of Directors.

KSHN SAFE Scholarship

Each year, the Kentucky Safety and Health Network, Inc. provides scholarships to eligible undergraduate and graduate college students. The scholarships are referred to as the Scholastic Achievement for Education Awards, or “SAFE” Awards.

Phillip L. Turner Fire Protection Scholarship

FAMA is offering one (1) $5,000 scholarship to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student currently registered in the upcoming year of a four-year fire protection engineering program or a full-time master’s degree program in fire protection engineering or administration. Applicants from Oklahoma State University, University of Maryland or other Universities offering similar programs will be eligible for this award.

Requirements for Consideration:

  • Applicant must be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student currently registered in the upcoming school year.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a four-year fire protection engineering program.
  • Or applicant must be enrolled in a full-time master’s degree program in fire protection engineering or administration.

Please note:  Applications must be submitted via the online form below.  The following items are to be submitted separately:

  • Letter of recommendation by professor of school or appropriate department head.
  • Official transcripts including cumulative college grade point and courses taken at the college or university.

Application Deadline: June 1*

Letters of recommendation and original college transcripts must be submitted via mail and must be postmarked with a date of no later than June 1. Awards will be announced in August at Fire Rescue International.

SFPE Philadelphia

This scholarship is available to full-time students with at least sophomore standing. Students need not be enrolled in a fire protection engineering degree program but may be in an allied engineering, architectural or science program and demonstrate an interest in fire protection.

The Scholarship Committee of the Philadelphia-Delaware Valley Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers is pleased to announce its offering of scholarships for the 2020-2021 academic year. We are seeking candidates for consideration to receive awards from the John D. Cook III and Philip L. Gaughan Scholarship Funds, for demonstrated academic achievement. In the past, scholarship awards ranging from $500.00 to $2,500.00 have been awarded. More than one scholarship may be awarded, depending on the number and quality of applications received. This past year three scholarships were awarded, 2 for $2500 and 1 for $1000.

TVSFPE Scholarship

There is not a requirement for applicants to be from Tennessee nor have any ties to the state. This scholarship is based on merit so financial hardships are also not considered as part of the selection process. All applicants will be notified during the summer as to whether they will be awarded a scholarship.

NFPA Fire Safety Educational Memorial Fund Scholarship Program

In past years, the National Fire Protection Association has offered scholarships to qualified applicants.  Please contact NFPA directly for current availability.

Kelly Services Future Engineers Scholarship Program

Kelly Services Future Engineers Scholarship Program is available for the full-time students who are interested in engineering and want to build their career in engineering fields and have achieved cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

The Scholarship Deadline is November.

SFPE NJ NY Metro Chapters Education Foundation

Scholarships available to Fire Protection Engineering students who have a primary residence in the NY/NJ metro area. The deadline for submission is usually September for the latest round of scholarships.

The purpose of this scholarship program is to promote the field of fire protection engineering and fire protection engineering technology by providing financial assistance to those individuals requiring support. Students enrolled or planning to enroll in any fire protection engineering, fire protection engineering technology, or related program approved by our scholarship committee are considered eligible.

Any students from the NJ/NY Metro area that may meet the guidelines may submit an application.
