Welcome to the First-Year Writing Program!

The literacy promoted in ENG 101R ENG 101, and ENG 102 is important for personal development, for achievement in university courses, and for success in nearly every aspect of employment. Through speaking, listening, reading, and writing, students engage in rhetorical activity from inquiry and invention to critical reflection and revision.

In these courses, students will read critically, write for a variety of specific purposes, respond to sources and incorporate them into their own writing, analyze and construct arguments, and revise their work in response to peer and instructor feedback. Students learn that written language is instrumental in communication, reflection, and critical thinking. Further, an author’s purpose demands appropriate rhetorical strategies and that may require more than written language such as using sound, images, or video.

Your First-Year Writing classes should give you tools to help make those decisions and allow you to practice in an environment where you’ll get valuable feedback on improving your approach to these situations.

To help students accomplish these goals, instructors provide opportunities for relevant and productive practice, intervene effectively in students’ composing processes, and offer timely and constructive feedback on student work. They also model an abiding care for language in its personal and public uses.
