Creative Writing

Bluegrass Writers Studio Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing

  • Students take live, online workshops in creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry, working with published authors and their peers [most low-res program do not offer live workshops]

BA in English with a Creative Writing emphasis

  • Provides marketability and flexibility to students interested in the connections between English and History/Social Studies teaching or who may be on-the-fence about which subject they’d rather teach

English Teaching

  • Only Kentucky university with an onsite K-12 Model School, which allows students to observe and practice teaching early and often (starting their first year) without leaving campus
  • Graduates obtain English teaching positions within the first few interviews and are often offered positions at multiple schools
  • Continue tradition of being one of only two teaching colleges in Kentucky at the turn-of-the-twentieth century

Undergraduate English

Professional and Technical Writing (PTW) undergraduate certificate unique in KY offers

  • Brevity: students earn the PTW by taking only 6 classes
  • Breadth: classes are spread across 3 departments in 2 colleges
  • Depth: in addition to learning foundational writing and communication skills, PTW students learn advanced visual design skills, international business communication approaches, and successful job search strategies
  • Awards: PTW students have won the August cover design contests at the international journal Technical Communication in 2019, 2020, and 2021; and the November design contests in 2019 and 2020

B.A. in English

  • Graduates employed in every career field because employers demand writing and communication skills
  • Offers a wide diversity of courses (beyond those listed above), from Appalachian literature to Shakespeare to Science Fiction; from Editing and Stylistics to Grammar and Linguistics; from Composition and Rhetoric to Digital Design to Women and Gender Studies
