Understanding our Shared Society and How it Changes

Sociologists study human experience as it unfolds within societies and changes over time. Our field teaches students the intricacies of everyday life and its dynamics, how the family shapes our lives, issues surrounding gender and sexuality, how to better understand human relationships to the environment, conditions and relations of race and ethnic relations, and where the modern world came from and where it might be going.

Sociologists will continue to be needed to apply sociological research to other disciplines. For example, sociologists may collaborate with researchers in other social sciences, such as economists, psychologists, and survey researchers, to study how social structures or groups influence policy decisions about health, education, politics, criminal justice, business, or economics.

This concentration gives students a broad knowledge base within the field, emphasizing electives in a variety of areas of the students’ own choosing. Combined with basic skills in research methods and analysis, the General Sociology concentration widens students’ job opportunities in a rapidly changing economy where specialized jobs often become outdated. Students who major in sociology are taught to think critically, communicate effectively, and respond constructively to the challenges and opportunities they will encounter. A concentration in General Sociology provides a gateway to many different professions.

This concentration equips students with a sociological understanding of social diversity through a variety of lenses including, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality, as well as the intersections of these identities. Students who pursue this concentration will also gain a broad knowledge base and research and data analysis training through required courses in the major. Their additional coursework will focus more specifically on gaining knowledge and competencies related to issues of diversity and equity. This concentration allows students to signal desirable skills to future employers such as cultural competency and the ability to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

I love the different events that are held by the colleges. I also really enjoy the opportunities faculty give the students to involve them in the university. EKU faculty are instrumental in my status as a student right now. I would not be here without them. They make sure that I am doing okay and give me advice and council for what I need to do to succeed.
