A history teaching degree sets a student on the path to become a social studies teacher in Kentucky at the high school level (grades 8-12). A history-teaching degree is like a double major. Students take almost all the same courses as a history major, plus some additional social studies courses such as political science or sociology. A history teaching major also takes education courses to prepare for work in Kentucky school districts. As an incoming history-teaching major, students are in effect pre-teaching until they are admitted to the professional education program, usually at the end of the sophomore year.

Please review the admissions requirements before applying for this or any program. If you have questions about the program or are planning to register for classes, please speak to the program advisor.

Students may transfer up to 90 hours of credit from accredited institutions. Please note that a minimum of 30 credit hours in this degree program must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.

Previously earned credits must be reviewed upon admission to EKU for appropriate articulation.

Please note that certain degree programs have special admission requirements. Admission to the University does not mean automatic admission to all degree programs.

• December 1 for spring enrollment
• May 1 for summer enrollment

The teacher education programs offered by Eastern Kentucky University and the College of Education are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and/or the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB). The initial teacher preparation programs, including the undergraduate baccalaureate programs, Master of Arts in Teaching, and Communication Disorders are accredited by both CAEP and EPSB and the advanced level professional education programs are accredited by EPSB only.

I would have to say that my AFA minor has greatly affected my life post-graduation. The coursework I completed, and the many experiences I gained as an AFA minor have afforded me a much richer and more informed perspective about the world I live in today. Although I have always been interested in issues of social justice, I know my experience with AFA helped to refine my perspective and inspired me to pursue a career that allows me to continue being a part of the discussion of race, justice, and social change.
