Department Awards

The Department of Chemistry and Forensic Science has a number of awards that are presented at the Annual Awards ceremony in the Spring Term. Students receiving these awards are selected by the Department of Chemistry and Forensic Science Awards Committee.


 

Chemistry Program Awards

Darnell Salyer Award (Top Senior in Chemistry)

The top senior student in chemistry will be awarded $100 in cash and a name plaque will be placed on the wall near the chemistry departmental office on the 4th floor of the Science Building. The awardee must be a graduating major in the Department of Chemistry. The student will be judged by performance in Chemistry courses at EKU as well as overall excellence in all other courses.

Top Junior Award

The top junior awardee will have the amount of $100 deducted from their registration fees for the next fall semester. The awardee must be a student who has earned between 60 and 89 credit hours at the time of the selection. The student will be judged by performance in chemistry courses at EKU as well as overall excellence in all other courses.

Top Sophomore Award

The top sophomore awardee will have the amount of $100 deducted from their registration fees for the next fall semester. The awardee must be a student who has earned between 30 and 59 credit hours at the time of the selection. The student will be judged by performance in chemistry courses at EKU as well as overall excellence in all other courses.

Top Freshman Award

The top freshman award will be awarded a Handbook of Chemistry and Physics donated by the Chemical Rubber Company. The awardee must be a student who has completed less than 30 credit hours of classes at the time of the selection. The student will be judged by performance in the first attempt in CHE 111/112.

Top Student Awards

Top student awards are presented to the students who have the best academic achievement in the areas of general chemistry, organic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and biochemistry.

Emerging Chemist Award

A Merck Index donated by David Igo, a graduate from the EKU Chemistry Department, will be awarded to a graduating student with a Chemistry major who has shown potential in Chemistry (not necessarily the student with the highest GPA).

Harry Smiley Memorial Graduate Chemistry Award

This award was established in memory of Dr. Harry M. Smiley and honors our top returning graduate student each year. The recipient of this award shows excellence in teaching and service to the department, and has embarked on an active research program. Also, the recipient must be a resident of Kentucky.

The Thomas Herndon Scholarship (awarded to a junior or senior)

This scholarship is endowed from a bequest by Dr. Thomas C. Herndon, former professor and chair of the Chemistry Department. The award (amount to be determined when interest is known) will be deducted from the student’s registration fees for the next fall semester. The awardee must be a major in the Department of Chemistry with a minimum 3. 0 GPA. Only those who apply for the award can receive it.

Outstanding Teaching Assistantships Award

Awarded to the current teaching assistants that exceed the expectations set out in the courses which they have been assigned. Separate awards are given for excellence as a teaching assistant in lower level chemistry, upper level chemistry, and forensic science courses.

Outstanding Tutor Award

This award is voted on by the students for excellence in tutoring chemistry and forensic science courses.


 

Forensic Science Program Awards

Students receiving awards in the forensic science program are selected by the advisors and director of the forensic science program.

Outstanding Senior in Forensic Science

Awarded to a graduating senior who has shown outstanding academic achievement and potential for a productive career in forensic science. This award carries an honorarium of $100.

Outstanding Junior in Forensic Science

Awarded to a junior in the forensic science program who has excelled in the classroom. This award carries an honorarium of $100.


 

Scholarships awarded by the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

The College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics has a number of scholarship opportunities. Chemistry and forensic science majors are encouraged to apply for these scholarships.
