Curriculum & Enrollment

EKU’s Communication Disorders bachelor’s degree program offers a dynamic and interactive program that enhances student learning. Graduates of the program are well prepared to start careers as speech-language pathology assistants or continue their studies in a speech-language pathology or audiology graduate program.

The curriculum provides a balanced degree that blends academic and professional experience through course topics such as normal speech and language development, articulation and phonetic disorders, school services in communication disorders, and the assessment and treatment of language disorders.

A minimum of 120 credits are required to graduate.

Please review the admissions requirements before applying for this or any program. If you have questions about the program or are planning to register for classes, please speak to the program advisor.

Students may transfer up to 90 hours of credit from accredited institutions. Please note that a minimum of 30 credit hours in this degree program must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.

Previously earned credits must be reviewed upon admission to EKU for appropriate articulation.

Students must first be admitted to EKU as a pre-communication disorders major before applying to the full program. The deadline to apply to the full program is February 14 of the student’s sophomore year. Please review the full admission requirements below.

Students admitted to EKU will be classified as a pre-Communication Disorders (CD) major and assigned a program advisor. Having Pre-CD status does not guarantee admission into the full CD undergraduate program. Pre-CD majors will be restricted to enrollment in the following major CSD courses: CSD 275, 311, and 360. Students must apply for full program admission by February 14th of their sophomore year.

To be eligible to apply for admission in the CD Program, the following minimum criteria must be met:

  • 40 completed college credit hours
  • GPA of 3.0 overall (on a 4.0 scale) for the 40 semester credit hours completed
  • Minimum ACT composite score of 21 (or SAT equivalent)

Once admitted to the pre-CD program, the student must earn a grade of “C” or higher in CSD 275: Introduction to Communication Disorders or an equivalent transfer course before registering for any CSD courses in the major requirements.

Determining Admission

  • The CD program will admit 30 new undergraduate students each year to enter the junior-level CSD course sequence.
  • EKU applies a GPA x ACT formula to determine a rank order for those applying.
  • Admission criteria will apply to all students equally, whether they are enrolled at EKU or transfer to EKU. Transfer students do not have to be enrolled in university courses at the time they apply.

Please note: If transfer students have been enrolled in a speech-language pathology program elsewhere, their admission will be determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the program level (Junior or senior) they will enter at EKU and the ability of the CD Program to accommodate their admission at that time.
