Ms. Cara Makinen began her professional career at EKU in the Fall of 1997 as a Library Associate. During this time, she completed her associate degree in office systems. After completing her associate degree, Ms. Makinen pursued her BBA degree full-time while working as a student worker for the then Department of Management, Marketing, and Administrative Communication. It was during her completion of her BBA degree and time as a student worker in the then College of Business and Technology that Ms. Makinen decided on a career in higher education. In 2001, Ms. Makinen was hired by the Office of Admissions as part of the processing team. This opportunity led her back to the College of Business and Technology as an Academic Administrative Specialist, where she held this position for four years.
Ms. Makinen was a full-time mother for fourteen years as she raised her three wonderful children, worked in her church’s preschool program, and volunteered in many capacities at her church. During this time, she also worked part-time as an Appraisal Assistant for two appraisal firms in Richmond, KY. In 2019, on a chance encounter with Ms. Julie Spease, Ms. Makinen was given the opportunity to return to the College of Business and Technology Advising Office. Her role as an Advising Specialist is especially fulfilling as she helps new freshmen as they enter the University and during graduation, as her students complete their degrees.
Not only has EKU aided Ms. Makinen in obtaining her career goals, but she also met her husband during her freshman year at EKU. Bryan and Cara married at the end of their sophomore year and have been married for 26 years. Bryan is also employed at EKU as the Associate Vice President for Facilities and Safety. Together, the Makinens cherish their faith, family, and ability to serve EKU.
