Dr. Juan Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Risk Management and Insurance program at EKU. She joined EKU in the Fall 2021. Since then, she has taught courses at the undergraduate level and the MBA level, including the principles of risk and insurance, risk management, the fundamentals of life and health insurance, and the MBA enterprise risk management.

Dr. Zhang conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of insurance, actuarial science, accounting, and finance. Her research interests include loss reserving, solvency regulation, catastrophic risk and resilience, and insurance economics. She has published in peer-reviewed academic journals, including Health Economics and Natural Hazards. She has also published a peer-reviewed book chapter in the book titled “Hurricane Risk in a Changing Climate.” Dr. Zhang has presented at various academic conferences. She is a member of the Risk Theory Society and the American Risk and Insurance Association. She was a past member of the Asia Pacific Risk and Insurance Association and the Western Risk and Insurance Association.

Dr. Zhang received a bachelor’s degree in supply chain management and a master’s degree in insurance from the Central University of Finance and Economics in China. After that, she came to study in the U.S. and received her Ph.D. degree in risk management and insurance from Temple University. Before she joined EKU, Dr. Zhang worked at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners as a post-doctoral researcher. Dr. Zhang has received awards and prizes, including the Spencer Doctoral Candidate Scholarship, the Huebner Doctoral Colloquium Scholarship, the Hagen Family Foundation Travel Award from ARIA, the Kyobo Life Travel Grants from APRIA, and the First Place of the Ph.D. Student Research Competition in the 1st Year Category and the Second Place in the 3rd/4th Year Category from Temple University.
