The Marching Colonels include three amazing teams that provide visual elements to our halftime and stands performances: Color Guard, Maroonettes, and Feature Twirlers. The band is open to every student at EKU, however there are some prerequisite skills needed in order to be successful.

Color Guard

Marching Colonels Color Guard is open to all students who can complete entry-level skills prior to band camp. We have students from competitive high schools, the DCI/WGI circuits, as well as students with minimal experience spinning flag and/or rifle. If you want to learn, and put in the work on basic skills prior to August 1, you can be a part of our guard program.

Auditions: Guard auditions consist of a simple routine that encompasses basic skills used every day in practice, including drop spins, angles, tosses, and body choreography. Please go here to see linked videos on how to perform these skills. (Please note that you can slow down the videos using the Gear option at the bottom left). Students can attend a Color Guard clinic during the spring or summer to learn and/or pass off on skills, or students can submit a video of them performing those skills prior to August 1st.

Clinics: EKU bands hosts THREE on campus clinics, one in May, June and July. Our upcoming clinics are June 8 & 22, 2-5pm and July 19 & 20, 2-5pm. Additionally, students can contact our guard captains, who will be happy to meet (in person or virtually) to coach and help you learn those skills.

Questions? Email Coach Kathlyn Cummings Black or email our Captains: Kendra Bennett or Savanna Harvey.

Maroonettes

The Marching Colonels Maroonettes dance team is open to all current (and incoming) students. The Maroonettes team consists of 7-9 of the best dancers at EKU.

Tryouts: EKU bands hosts THREE on campus clinics, one in May, June and July. Our upcoming clinics are June 8 & 22, 2-5pm and July 19 & 20, 2-5pm. The audition process starts with teaching dancers a routine, participate in an interview, and perform for the staff and captains. The June 22 date will not be an in-person audition, but a video submission deadline. July 20 will be in-person auditions.

Questions? Email our captain, Jayanna Bracken.

Feature Twirlers

EKU Marching Colonels Feature Twirlers are a growing section of baton twirlers who have developed a reputation for twirling fire at every home game.

Auditions: Feature Twirlers should contact Dr. Wiggins and prepare video of them twirling a routine at a performance or as a sample. Videos are reviewed on a rolling basis. This video ensures that ability levels will be comparable to the current team. Once decisions are made, students will collaborate with Dr. Wiggins to design a custom uniform, purchased by the band.

Questions? Email our captain, Emily Ross.
