The ASLA seeks to support the mission of the ASLIE Department by increasing the understanding, respect, and equality of Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing people. We are celebrating American Sign Language by encouraging students of all levels to get involved and stay connected with the Deaf Community.
ASLA hosts a wide variety of events each semester. In the past, the organization has presented events such as movie nights, craft nights, 101/102 mixers, winter balls, member-only events, Deaf speaker events, and more. They have also partnered with the ASL LLC and the Campus Rec for other events. ASLA can also be found tabling at things such as Colonel Craze, Big E Weekend Welcome Back Bash, Winter Craze, and more.
The cost of membership dues depends on whether you are a new member or renewing your membership from a previous semester. The established price will also rely on the decision of the current ASLA board but typically ranges from $5-$10 per semester. Please contact a member of the board for more specific details regarding dues.
The main and most popular event hosted by the ASLA is Silent Coffee. Silent Coffee occurs bi-weekly on the established night for the semester from 6-8pm in the Powell Student Center. Non-members and community members are welcome to attend Silent Coffee.
Follow the ASLA on social media to stay up-to-date on events happening and further information about how to join.
*Please check above pages for cancellations, as “Silent Coffee” is sometimes canceled in lieu of other Deaf events.
