Join our Eastern Kentucky University Interpreter Outreach Program workshop to develop a solid schema of common ASL linguistic features and techniques employed by Deaf interpreters in English-to-ASL translation. Through hands-on exercises, participants will apply this schema to analyze English-to-ASL interpretations, ultimately synthesizing their findings into a deliberately practiced interpretation from ASL to English.

Objectives include:

1. Mastering Deliberate Practice: Understand the process and purpose of deliberate practice in ASL interpretation.
2. Unlocking Techniques for Effective Meaning Transfer: Identify key English-to-ASL techniques utilized by Deaf bilinguals, ensuring effective meaning transfer.
3. Hands-On Application: Create ASL-to-English interpretations and employ critical analysis to assess and enhance their effectiveness.
4. Developing Enhanced Meaning Transfer: Develop and implement an interpretation that maximizes meaning transfer, based on the acquired skills and techniques.

Jacob Alexander, presenter, is an Oklahoma native and Sole Member of ScissorTail Interpreting, LLC. He started professional interpreting in 2013, transitioning full-time in 2021, after Special Education work. Jacob’s diverse experience spans medical, Video Relay, and community settings, specializing in court, designated interpreting, and various platform settings.
